</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Our technicans used a scissor lift (see above) to install the artwork on the 8m high wall of the Old Fire Station's atrium. When we had originally planned the installation we were expecting to put the work up after the builder's had moved out. Unfortunately there were many problems and delays with the build, so we installed in the middle of a very busy building site. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There was no thought of delaying installation as invitations had been sent out to the opening event, and the unveiling of our commission was to be part of the opening ceremony!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We worked in a cloud of dust with all the related difficulties (nowhere to lay out the panels and white gloves seemed pointless!), but the technicians did a sterling job and our work was up within a couple of days.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

It was fantastic to see the building being used, and to see children, actors and dancers, and the general public exploring the building and enjoying it's wonderful spaces. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For Emma and I it was special to see people reflected in the artwork, and to see children interacting with it. This was an important part of our vision for this work, as we wanted the work to reflect the life of the building, and to be changed by it. </div>Rachel Barbaresihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16020132452939818816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2666134820408111532.post-32126540348065589602011-11-06T13:25:00.000-08:002011-11-06T13:25:17.303-08:00The designs<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTMJwbPRrtPWNefUuP0aB32r4tWp4ap2IbsKhJoRzrXsRzsIlqtNOyjKcyoPTE15AwHJmCFsngLcmt7v3_ZAp-h4iA1nuWKg6a-Psx9GdJultxS-F6KvbBTANoGHNvHr9fAn20o-FTWvc/s1600/overall+design.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTMJwbPRrtPWNefUuP0aB32r4tWp4ap2IbsKhJoRzrXsRzsIlqtNOyjKcyoPTE15AwHJmCFsngLcmt7v3_ZAp-h4iA1nuWKg6a-Psx9GdJultxS-F6KvbBTANoGHNvHr9fAn20o-FTWvc/s640/overall+design.jpg" width="523" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> This is the overall design of the main atrium wall. There are 40 panels, most of which were designed by the 10 participants in our workshops. Some of the designs were repeated at different scales to create a 'scatter' effect. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The lighter grey panels were to be finished in mirror-polished steel. We wanted to contrast the very industrial look of the building with a shiny reflective finish. We also wanted the work to reflect the people and the life of the building and to respond to changing light throughout the day.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The darker panels are finished in brushed steel to create contrast where panels are layered.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Panels are fixed at different depths - some flat to the wall, and others floating up to 5cm in front of it, creating shadows and a feeling of depth.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<br />
Looking back at what the participants achieved during the 6 days of workshops is very inspiring. There are such a wide range of processes and techniques evident in the work. We had to select just a sample of the works created and we hope it illustrates the story of how we came to design and create the final work.<br />
<br />
<br />
The exhibition can be seen in The Art Room / Crisis at The Old Fire Station on Saturday 5th November.Rachel and Emmahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11377190205521654186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2666134820408111532.post-86198226353004571092011-10-13T15:03:00.000-07:002011-10-29T15:22:05.637-07:00Installation weekThis week we had Adam and Matt working with us to install the artwork. It was a daunting job but with all out co-operation we finally finished it today!<br />
<br />
We are all totally exhausted, but very pleased and proud of how the work looks on the wall.<br />

It arrived on time on a truck, bubble wrapped and packaged up in card. We have stored all the panels in the shop area as the Gallery space was being used to store the furniture from the reception area whilst the floor resin was drying.<br />

We called 2 Cousins to check the situation with the scissor lift so that is all in order too.<br />
<br />
At this stage we are checking the fixings and may have to return a few of the screw coverings as the measurements we were advised upon weren't correct. We will source the screws tomorrow and go back to the OFS to unwrap the artwork and position them, ready for installation on Monday!<br />

<br />
Rachel and I were really excited to see the work being cut. All the staff from Emsea were very accommodating and spent a lot of time explaining how the machines work. We also got a tour of the workshop and saw what other techniques they offered, this was good to keep in mind for potential future projects. Due to their experience and expertise they are able to offer advise and solutions with fixtures and fittings.<br />

<br />
The laser cutting machine is in a vacuum as to eliminate any oxygen entering and causing burnishing to the cut edge. It was fascinating watching the laser create what seemed like a confident drawn line across the metal. As soon as the circuit was complete, sparks would fly up from the metal and the machine operator would release the chunk of metal.<br />

<br />
<br />
Whilst we were waiting for the machine to finish cutting, Chris showed us some samples of other cutting methods. One technique which we had considered for this project was water-jet cutting (using water and sand at an extremely high pressure) The advantage of this is that it can cut through metal of a huge depth although it is very time consuming. The finish was a lovely, textured sand blasted finish on the cut area.<br />

When all the pieces had been cut from the panel, each section was removed and piled up ready for delivery. It was beautiful to see the designs we have worked with from ideas - experimentation - textiles - printing and drawing to eventually come alive in the metal. <br />

We are very happy with the quality of work which Emsea have done for us and would definitely use them again in the future.<br />

<br />
I had a call today from the technician who prepares the drawings for cutting. He is very experienced with complex designs like ours and seemed to be totally unphased by the scale and intricacy of the work. I was also pleased that he hasn't found too many errors in our artwork thanks to advice from Natasha of <a href="http://www.graceandwebb.com/">Grace and Webb</a>. Emma and I spent hours spent tidying up our files and curving every little sharp corner in the 39 panels that are being cut for the installation. He picked up on a few blips, but nothing major.<br />
<br />
I'm now hoping that the very complicated document I sent this evening showing how all the panels will be fixed on the wall doesn't scare him off!<br />
<br />
We plan to visit the fabricators to see the first few panels being cut and should be able to post pics on here next week.Rachel Barbaresihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16020132452939818816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2666134820408111532.post-65632794522824489322011-09-22T18:38:00.000-07:002011-10-09T06:23:20.153-07:00What next? Designs.It's been a while since i've posted on this blog, so I will try and update you on what Emma and I have been doing since the workshops ended.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>A lot of very strong and interesting work was developed during the workshops using a wide range of media and processes. It was always our intention to use many different techniques. The artists from the homeless community who we'd met prior to the workshops had a range of creative interests, and they also wanted to learn new techniques. Whilst we wanted the process of developing ideas to be as open as possible, and we had no idea what people would produce during the workshops, we had a specific process in mind for making the final artwork to enable us to bring such an eclectic portfolio of work into a cohesive design. This doesn't mean we had any idea what it would look like!</div><div><br />
</div><div>So at the end of the workshops, Emma and I organised all the artist's work into portfolios, selecting a few images from each artist to try out in our design. We spent hours tracing and photographing people's work, importing the images onto the computer and then adapting some of them further so that they would be suitable for laser-cutting. </div><div><br />
</div><div>This was followed by many more hours working with the images, finding ways to integrate the various designs, layering them, playing with scale, repetition and the relationships between images. Some images didn't work and we went back to the portfolios to look at alternatives, starting the process again. </div><div><br />
</div><div>At this stage we started to become more hands on with creating our own drawings and designs to add to the composition. We began to see what was still needed, both compositional and thematically. I went back to the University botanical gardens to make drawings, tracings and photographs. Emma happened to be in Edinburgh where there are fantastic botanical gardens, and looked at microscopic images of palm leaves. These were the final pieces in the jigsaw puzzle that brought the designs together.<br />

During a recent visit to Edinburgh I visited the newly refurbished Museum. I wanted to have a look at the Natural History section to see if there was anything inspiring which I could use for additional design ideas for the laser-cut piece. I was particularly intrigued by the range of corals. I really like the shape and the details. I found a huge brain coral (Susan fron Oxford Natural History Museum ) had brought a smaller one in to one of our sessions for the participants to look at. It reminded me somewhat of labyrinths and one of the participant's work who came to one of the taster sessions.<br />
I did a drawing of this - not looking at the paper, just at the object.<br />

This was a highly polished stone (sorry I can't remember the name), it was about 5ft tall and about 20cm thick. It was an incredibly tactile piece, however what caught my eye was the clusters of pattern. The shapes were irregular and almost reminded me of cellular structures.<br />
<br />

Another rock with similar patterns of clusters. This reminds me of the patterns on a giraffe!<br />

Fan-like coral, this has lots of movement and I love the delicacy of it. I can see this working well as a laser-cut piece already.<br />

During my trip to Edinburgh I took the opportunity to visit some galleries whilst the Arts Festival was on. There were many exhibitions which resonated with the work which we have been doing during the workshops. This artist 'Ingrid Calame' was exhibiting at The Fruitmarket Gallery.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGT9DYc-AniBuMBdZBQuEu0E1yE2aenhTQ0mnDeTSCKDHXftIchZyr3Ujpx789OYE7noqh5r0ecOX3_GZkSUe6DUuqdODcxDwGxZxzRXPmaT8NhqGJbTxvRu_l0GslAKsDvfpyeLEiJIg/s1600/IMAG0004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGT9DYc-AniBuMBdZBQuEu0E1yE2aenhTQ0mnDeTSCKDHXftIchZyr3Ujpx789OYE7noqh5r0ecOX3_GZkSUe6DUuqdODcxDwGxZxzRXPmaT8NhqGJbTxvRu_l0GslAKsDvfpyeLEiJIg/s320/IMAG0004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Calame traces individual stains, cracks and markings from specific sites and translates them into her work. The tracings made me think about the proces which were were using to develop the artwork, picking out certain areas and building a bigger pieces from smaller images. This pieces was made by painting enamel paint into large sheets of tracing paper, I culd imagine the laser-cut work having a similar effect.<br />

Calame uses coloured pencil to trace onto Mylar on a large-scale. You can see the layers of tracings overlapping each other. We have used a similar idea with layering the laser-cut pieces.<br />

It was a privilege to get to see this unexpected Rauschenburg exhibition at The Edinburgh Botanic gardens. I was particularly interested in the way in which Rauschenburg had used the materials. Many of the pieces were screen-printed onto mirror finished aluminum. I liked the effect of layers which occurred as you viewed the print on top and then saw the depth of the room through the reflection in the metal.<br />

A large-scale spray painted piece. Stencils were made and cut out from a previous drawing. The stencils (both positive & negative) were used to build up layers of pattern. To create a sense of movement the direction of leaves was considered and spread across the paper from a thicker areas drifting off into just a couple of leaf shapes.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">We had another opportunity to visit the Old Fire Station. The last time we saw the space, it was mostly covered by scaffolding, so we didn't get a good look at it. On returning, the scaffold has been removed and the space was clear. It was useful to see the wall after just working from the architects drawings up until now. It gave us the chance to visualize our finished artwork on the wall and to see if where we had decided to place things was going to work. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzXTRS8aSuMmJTzNINoAaydlNH1aetb54PL4CnFsUgdR-pMzwV_-hIxNEcEZD4ZV3AFhdfKs-M9swqwVkwkhvCaI5wv8urexlrq9sx6RDfr7385KcxVL39C1RDc4schmsoS7sXt3anOOk/s1600/IMG_4673.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzXTRS8aSuMmJTzNINoAaydlNH1aetb54PL4CnFsUgdR-pMzwV_-hIxNEcEZD4ZV3AFhdfKs-M9swqwVkwkhvCaI5wv8urexlrq9sx6RDfr7385KcxVL39C1RDc4schmsoS7sXt3anOOk/s320/IMG_4673.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><i> This is the left-hand side of the rendered area on the ground floor. </i><br />

This is the section which will be viewed immediately after entering the building. We have two layered pieces here. The lower one which is a sand-blasted finish and the one slightly higher will have a mirror finish. We decided on this as the mirror finish is more high maintenance and is likely to pick up fingerprints and grease much easier. We also made such that these lower pieces were to be fixed flat to the wall as to prevent any potential sharp edges sticking out.<br />

Being able to view the space we noticed other areas which we thought might be intriguing places to hang the work too. Such as the space on the first floor by the glazed window area. We liked the long space and thought that maybe one of Connor's pieces would work there. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> This wall is to the right of the main wall. The artwork will be viewed from different angles. We are hoping that at different times throughout the day, shadows will be cast on the wall behind.<br />

Initially we were planning on hanging Robin's piece here and also another smaller piece lower down. However when we saw the space we didn't feel that it would work well here. We thought that the cupboard would be a distraction and the length of the wall didn't provide the piece with enough space. Instead we have decided to hang it on another wall (see above).<br />

<br />
This is going to be the Crisis Art Room. This is where art classes will take place and it will also be the space where we will put up the exhibition of the work which was done in the workshops. It is a great space, lots of natural light and cupboard space with tables in the centre of the room. The Art room opens out onto a roof top garden! It looks as though it is going to be a very inspiring space.<br />

Both Rachel and I are very excited about getting the finished artwork up on the wall. We are now waiting for the fabricators to start cutting the metal. Hopefully we will be able to visit during this process and take some photos.Rachel and Emmahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11377190205521654186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2666134820408111532.post-36819739843862876912011-08-26T13:34:00.000-07:002011-09-22T16:16:31.055-07:00Our last day at the Botanical GardensAfter spending five beautiful days in glorious sunshine at the gardens, on our final day it poured all day. Plans to do a group activity of making large scale tracings of dappled sunlight under the trees went out of the window. Instead we headed to the Arid house to draw cacti and dream of sunshine.<br />

Emma set the group lots of tasks for making quick drawings in our sketchbooks, from continuous line and negative space to looking at a small area in close detail. Making observational drawings in this way enabled us to see plants afresh and make new discoveries as well as developing our drawing skills.<br />

Emma and I have been working on the final designs for the artwork in the last few days, and we found it helpful to look at the arrangement of plants in the arrid house. We have been playing with repeating motifs, by changing scale and rotation and creating a feeling of 'scatter' in their placement. We could see something similar by looking at the arrangements of the cacti with larger and older plants surrounded by smaller specimens.<br />

We returned to the education room for lunch and were joined by Karyn, the senior tutor from Crisis, who wanted to introduce herself to our group and find out what people would like from the skylight centre. We had an interesting discussion and found out about the wide range of interests and abilities in our group, from knitting and yoga to banjo and social psychology. Crisis will be working closely with local colleges to bring in tutors or send students to their courses. They will also run a wide range of day and evening courses. Taster sessions will take place in October and the courses will start in November. On the subject of courses, Lucy spoke to the Foundation Course tutor at a local college. They are fully booked for this year, but if anyone drops out she has a place. All on the strength of her project sketchbook. Well done Lucy!<br />

<br />
It was our turn to get feedback on our artwork. We were able to show the group our initial ideas and designs for the atrium wall at the Old Fire Station. We could show the process of developing designs, from making tracings of their drawings and then how we have worked with them on the computer by repeating motifs, layering images and playing with scale and spatial relationships. There were affirming nods and positive responses. There is more work to do, but the group seem happy with our designs so far. <br />
<br />
And finally it was time to say goodbye. It has been lovely working together with this group and we will miss our workshops at the Botanical Gardens. Hopefully we'll see everyone at the opening ceremony of the Old Fire Station. Each participant left with a venus fly-trap from the Botanical Gardens as a memento of the project. <br />
<br />
Emma and I want to say a big 'Thank you' to the Botanical Gardens for hosting us for these workshops. Working creatively in such a beautiful and tranquil place has been good for us all as well as providing fabulous source material and inspiration. We're also very grateful to the University Museums Outreach team for bringing us a range of interesting objects to draw and photograph.<br />

Emma and I are grateful to one of the participants, Chris, for capturing so many special moments with his camera. We don't have any photos of Day 5 as Chris tried his hand at video today. Here is his video showing the artists at work (nb. it's about 15 mins long).<br />
<br />

<br />
He has also incorporated his photographs into a slide show which gives a flavour of our experience working on this project at the Botanical Gardens.<br />
<br />

<br />
Day 5 was our last practical day at the gardens, and the last day that would involve Emma and I unloading a car full of materials and setting up a make-shift studio in the Botanical Garden's education room. We arrived with a list of interesting tasks to do with our participants, our final opportunity to do them before we start working on the designs.<br />
<br />
Today had another exciting dimension. Crisis have commissioned a local organisation - OFVM - to make a film about our project. This will be another special record of the process of developing the artwork. Crisis and Arts at the Old Fire Station also hope that this will communicate the way the two organisations can work together. The film will be shown at the formal opening of the new building.<br />
<br />
Connor, who did a foundation course a few years ago and creates really lively drawings, worked on some drawings from an interesting bush close to the education room. He managed to do this while talking to the film crew which was quite a feat.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile Maureen used templates created from tracings of leaves to make a large-scale spray painting. She thought carefully about the way she positioned the leaves, giving a sense that they are drifting round the sheet of paper. They remind me of leaves swirling in the wind.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnjWy0QS112JNPjeyVs6bUIwHawrAlWxLdUxNQf-dqam7BoUoE_VhaB5-T5ecGcOTurCv8Uxs41LnPNqiil015Rn1PRf-q9IOgoRDoBEdfJBuA4H7LoX-TvK27bZsmdwBcP6qG-vNIEpM/s1600/maureen_for-video.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnjWy0QS112JNPjeyVs6bUIwHawrAlWxLdUxNQf-dqam7BoUoE_VhaB5-T5ecGcOTurCv8Uxs41LnPNqiil015Rn1PRf-q9IOgoRDoBEdfJBuA4H7LoX-TvK27bZsmdwBcP6qG-vNIEpM/s320/maureen_for-video.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Dennis continued working with trees, developing his rubbings further by wrapping paper right around the tree trunks. He also tried to mould paper by dampening it and wrapping it around branches.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Shaun was very interested in Emma's books about mathematics in nature. He has been interested in circles throughout the project ("my whole life's a circle") and found seed heads and flowers to draw to develop this theme.<br />
<br />
Lucy added to some screen prints using spray painting and additional layers of print. We also discussed more seriously the possibility that Lucy could apply for a Foundation Art Course. Nichola is able to put Lucy in contact with a colleague who teaches on the Foundation Course. We all feel that Lucy would be a fantastic candidate for a Foundation Course and could pursue a career in art and design. She shows obvious strength in textiles and surface pattern and is very excited about the possibility of studying this subject. Good luck Lucy!Rachel and Emmahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11377190205521654186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2666134820408111532.post-36129723969656954642011-08-20T16:28:00.000-07:002011-08-26T12:25:45.465-07:00Day 4 at the Botanical Gardens<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq5GJgnBDk6GVTOPiUqDAaiYIHaftpRpTgQ3cbXZbBgZRoi6gyyMrO5winzeAR__ozttc6uLfMvND0tIUMSBIXd1BldspQFSkVUzpOXRj4yzQ0Eoc0ln-qVpYWq9uy8d8Sipfvu9E6BOk/s1600/P1010074_64.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq5GJgnBDk6GVTOPiUqDAaiYIHaftpRpTgQ3cbXZbBgZRoi6gyyMrO5winzeAR__ozttc6uLfMvND0tIUMSBIXd1BldspQFSkVUzpOXRj4yzQ0Eoc0ln-qVpYWq9uy8d8Sipfvu9E6BOk/s320/P1010074_64.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">Day 4 was another productive day at the Botanical Gardens. In the morning we divided up into groups, with each of us tackling particular tasks. Robin, Leon and myself went to the glasshouses to do some photography. Leon became particularly interested in photographing water and went on to develop a drawing from one of his images using the overhead projector to enlarge it.<br />
<br />
Robin looked at ivy and trailing plants. There are many interesting examples in the glasshouses.<br />

Meanwhile Maureen was working on continuous line drawings with Emma. They were looking at some of the interesting leaves and pieces of bark that Maureen had collected the previous day. Emma explained how to create drawings by keeping the pencil on the paper without taking it off, making a continuous line. The artist, Paul Klee, called this "taking a line for a walk". Lucy set herself a new challenge by working on a large scale painting. This was an ambitious task, both in scale and in use of a new process. After a while she felt that painting didn't come very naturally and returned to a process which she is now very comfortable with, making a stencil and continuing the piece of work by sponging paint onto the paper through the stencil. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkYbbb1GMGG1se_4mlb46GDvN_4mLneTwkJpAVe_ohUpYw1Z9PUhMvpZcvzj7IVlBa0VpBPwjuCLjPm89FaqY_PD_S7CR-ymBe7FOt51O31IA7fXTuiTe714dratiCDs7PjVkIzDRCiww/s1600/P1010160_64.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkYbbb1GMGG1se_4mlb46GDvN_4mLneTwkJpAVe_ohUpYw1Z9PUhMvpZcvzj7IVlBa0VpBPwjuCLjPm89FaqY_PD_S7CR-ymBe7FOt51O31IA7fXTuiTe714dratiCDs7PjVkIzDRCiww/s320/P1010160_64.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

We arrived ready for day 3 at the Botanical Gardens with the car packed full of materials once again. Driving over Magdalen Bridge the mist was rising over the river - such an atmospheric picture - however as we pulled into the car park we saw the garden already buzzing with the TV crew for the filming of 'Lewis' and the machines pumping out smoke!<br />
<br />
After a hectic hour of unloading, finding tables and turning the room into a studio once again, we began to welcome our group as they drifted in. Most of the people who'd worked with us on Tuesday came back and we quickly settled into tasks that Emma and I had planned for each participant.<br />
<br />
Ed joined us again to help with photography and we also had the support of Nichola Nixon who is an experienced art & design lecturer and artist.<br />
<br />
We handed out sketchbooks and prints of the photographs we took last week. Lucy immediately engaged with the idea of recording visual ideas, annotating photos and experimenting with materials and by mid-morning had a lively document of her work so far. She was very focused and worked so quickly, exploring the possibilities of working with stencils and cutting out shapes for a large-scale spray-painting. <br />

Dennis and Nichola set off around the gardens to make rubbings of tree bark. As usual, Dennis thought carefully about technique and created some interesting two-tone rubbings. Later he worked from these, using the window as a light-box to make tracings and drawings. At the end of the day he moved into printmaking, creating a plate for collagraphy using string.<br />

We started with two, and I realised that yesterdays success had much to do with organisations such as Steppin' Stones and the hostels facilitating by walking down to the gardens with participants. We rang the hostels to send messages to some of our participants and then waited expectantly. <br />
<br />
By lunchtime we had eight people with us. We also had Susan from the University Museums Outreach team and she had a collection of interesting artefacts including shells, coral, snake skins and a 3000 year old vase for us to handle. We looked at these, contrasting the spirals and patterns in the shells with those we had seen in the garden. Susan brought cameras and a printer so we were able to document the objects for use in artworks.<br />
<br />
In the afternoon we used a range of processes including felt-making, printing, 3D and drawing. The felt-makers responded to the intense and beautiful colours of the garden. It was lovely to watch this calm, meditative process of arranging and teasing out the wool, followed by the energetic massaging and rolling that completes the felting process. The results were very striking and all those involved seemed to enjoy the process.<br />
<br />
Dennis worked in a characteristically experimental way with print-making. He created rich textures with the ink on a large piece of laminate, dampened the paper and took prints. This developed into working onto the laminate with wax to create a resist and then introducing colour.<br />

He then used this to create some lovely repeat patterns that were reminiscent of 50's textiles. There is lots of scope to develop this.<br />
<br />
Shaun worked on a large-scale drawing of lily pads. He made his initial drawing on transparency film and we used the overhead projector to scale it up. He has a bold drawing style and has interesting ideas about how to develop these further in colour. I'm looking forward to seeing how this work unfolds!<br />

The day ended with time to reflect as a group on what we had achieved and it was great to have Jeremy with us to give some objective feedback and to tell us more about the Old Fire Station. One of our participants was concerned that the materials being used in the building would make it feel cold. This is a valid concern as there will be lots of industrial materials; steel, brick and concrete. Jeremy reassured us all that the spaces in the building will feel quite intimate and the original features will reveal the character and history of the buildings.Rachel and Emmahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11377190205521654186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2666134820408111532.post-13158583614336222272011-08-08T13:59:00.000-07:002011-08-14T13:38:39.014-07:00First workshop at the Botanical GardensAfter all the planning and four taster sessions we've finally started the workshops and we will begin to see the project and the art work take shape<br />
<br />
Emma and I had no idea how many and who to expect at the workshop today, but were delighted to see so many of the people we have worked with over the last six weeks arrive at the Botanical Gardens.<br />
<br />
The education room quickly filled up, and exceeded capacity with 16 participants, 3 support workers and 3 workshop leaders. There was a buzz and feeling of expectation, as well as a little nervousness and uncertainty.<br />
<br />
Some of the participants hadn't attended taster sessions and didn't know quite what to expect, so we recapped on the aims of the project before wandering around the garden to discover the spaces and plant life of the Botanical Gardens.<br />
<br />
It was interesting to see people orienting towards the areas which most interested them, ranging from a fascination with venus fly-traps and communing with fish in the pools, to the discovery of a beautiful colour and observing the shape ("like the backbone of a fish") of an unusual variety of Euphorbia. We heard and saw some wonderful reactions to the gardens, including someone who said "I had no idea this place existed, I thought it was just a place for snobs. I am going to buy a season ticket!". At one point I'd lost track of a few members of the group and wandered off to find them. I found one individual gazing into the pool with the giant lily pads. Another young man was practically jumping up and down with excitement as he'd discovered so many interesting plants that he knew about from watching 'The discovery channel' as a young boy.<br />

We had a delicious picnic lunch provided by Donnington Doorstep with tasty sandwiches and heavenly scones with cream and jam. After this we got back to work and went off into the gardens again armed with sketchbooks and cameras.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow we plan to work from this material using felting, 3D (modroc, wire, mesh etc.) and more drawing and painting.<br />

We worked with a small select group who were full of enthusiasm for the project and joined us in making drawings and prints. Being such a small group gave us lots of opportunity to get to know each other and share ideas.<br />
<br />
One participant is very keen to return to his interest in photography and we look forward to seeing his work develop during the next few weeks.<br />
<br />
We were joined by a very creative lady who is feeling ready for a new project and has wonderfully infectious energy and enthusiasm. She has so much to offer this project and we're looking forward to working with her. <br />
<br />
Some interesting suggestions were made, including the idea of manipulating the surfaces of the lasercut metal so that it curves.<br />

At the same time, we're providing lots of different creative opportunities and suggesting ways of working by joining in ourselves. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: small;">At Lucy Faithfull House we decided to save talks about the project until late morning by which time we hopefully would have a rapport with the group. </span> <br />
<div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: small;">In practice it made sense to delay the more formal presentation as people drifted in gradually. Again, there was a good atmosphere. Andy was there early on and Damien came and immediately got involved with using clay. Some people came and went, one of whom did a lovely drawing with inks onto a large sheet of Japanese paper.</span><br />

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: small;">A couple of people came over from O’Hanlon House, and stayed with us throughout the session. One worked very quietly throughout, doing some print and some painting. The other was very chatty and contributed lots of ideas, enthusiasm and humour to the session. </span><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: small;">There were lots of interesting contributions from the group and we spent longer chatting over the presentation than I had expected. </span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: small;">We noted down the comments and suggestions, however afterwards I wondered if we should have done more to encourage the group to draw and doodle during the session. We’ll aim to have lots of marker pens and big sheets of paper during the presentation at the Gatehouse. </span><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: small;">Overall we felt the session had gone well and everyone seemed to enjoy it. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">We prepared for the session at short notice, but managed to get together everything we needed to have a creative and fun couple of hours. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">The atmosphere during the afternoon was fantastic. We gave people the space to choose how to work, just making a few suggestions and providing materials. A big part of our role was to model different ways of working. Emma had covered two tables in large sheets of paper and Lucy, Emma and myself made drawings on these, with A, R and K joining in. Sharon made some lively experimental drawings using chalks and paintbrushes fixed to lengths of willow.</span><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">BW talked about making work in response to energies, and translates feelings into abstract work. I suggested she work with her sense of smell and gave her a range of scented plants and herbs to work with. She made some interesting drawings from these.</span><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">I set up the mono-printing equipment and started using this very simple process to make images. The process is gratifying and gives quick results. I worked with some flower images that Emma had brought in, tracing the images over the inked plate and then peeling back to reveal the print. A came and joined in, really enjoying the process. He was very focused and made lots of prints. I think there is lots of scope for him to develop this work and to try other methods of print (perhaps screen?)</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">Listening will be an important part of these sessions. Listening to ideas, to what people want to do and to the things people need to say. </span></div></div>Rachel and Emmahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11377190205521654186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2666134820408111532.post-55518090525735587522011-08-04T05:17:00.000-07:002011-08-04T05:17:47.132-07:00Welcome to the BlogThis blog has been set up by artists Emma Reynard and Rachel Barbaresi. The aim is to share the work in progress for the Old Fire Station Art Commission.<br />
We have so far completed four taster sessions in the following centres:<br />
<br />
<ul><li>Stepping Stones</li>
<li>Lucy Faithfull House / O'Hanlon House</li>
<li>The Gatehouse</li>
<li>Simon House</li>
</ul>We will update with a brief overview and what we achieved in each of these sessions, including images of artwork created. We will also discuss ideas and comments which were brought up in these sessions.<br />
Next week we are starting the workshops sessions at The Botanical Gardens. Both Rachel and I are really excited to get started on the ideas and design work for this inspiring project!<br />
We are hoping we will get some interested participants from each taster session we held. It will be a great opportunity to try out new techniques, share ideas, and meet new friends.<br />
Looking forward to seeing you there on Monday!Rachel and Emmahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11377190205521654186noreply@blogger.com0
